Thursday Evening Chamber Concert Live Stream

Schubert, Barber & Mendelssohn

Live Stream Concert Begins at 7PM MDT

In putting together the programs for this re-imagined season of Bravo! Vail, Artistic Director Anne-Marie McDermott was inspired both by the musicians who agreed to come and, of course, the music itself. Tonight’s program features great masterpieces of the chamber music repertoire. What the Nutcracker is to the world of ballet and the Godfather is to the world of film, Barber's Adagio and Mendelssohn's Octet are to the world of chamber music.

Barber’s Adagio for Strings is very well known, being most recently performed by the Berlin Philharmonic in response to the loss of life due to coronavirus. What many don't realize, however, is that it was originally composed as the slow movement of a larger work for string quartet. It is performed in this concert by the Dover Quartet in its original form.

The somberness of Barber will immediately be lifted by the sheer delight and liveliness in Mendelssohn's celebratory Octet. You will marvel at the masterful craftsmanship of a work written by a 16-year-old as a birthday present for his teachers. Somehow he fit composing into a life that also included playing multiple instruments, painting, and juggling!

Opening the program is an iconic work by Schubert, written originally for an unusual hybrid instrument we don't see today — a cross between a guitar, cello, and a viola da gamba.
